my mom and i haven’t always agreed on well, most things, but she has always supported me in my creative endeavors. when i was a kid, she gave me this little charles dickens, and i’ve had him ever since. she told me she gave it to me because “you’re a writer, gaddy”. everybody always called me gaddy growing up because we had a neighbor, howard jackson, who lived across the street and started calling me that when i was born. i grew up in a small town called hernando, mississippi, about 20 minutes south of downtown memphis. i learned growing up in a small town that when it comes down to it, people might not agree, but a community is a powerful thing. i didn’t know it until i got older and got my head out of my ass, but those people in my community at home have always loved and believed in me, no matter what. now that’s what is priceless. sorry, mastercard.
